This facility was experiencing degrading heat transfer in their process dryers and believed the problem was the improper removal of condensate.
After conducting a system assessment, Armstrong International advised that the problems could be solved through a series of system corrections beyond just properly retrieving and elevating condensate, as originally believed.
Armstrong provided a complete turnkey installed solution to this process heating problem. By working closely with plant engineering, Armstrong helped engineer and project manage the turnkey solution. It was learned that a single condensate collection header transported both pumped and steam trap condensate, which would cause condensate evacuation problems because of modulating pressure. Therefore, the lack of condensate removal and excessive steam pressure to the dryers needed to be evaluated simultaneously. The solution was provided by incorporating 3 duplex pumping stations, enlarging condensate return lines, and installing PRV’s to control the steam pressure at the dryers.
Total turnkey installed cost was $380,000.

Today, Ocean Spray enjoys improved product quality, improved dryer productivity and performance, reduced energy losses and less condensate waste. In addition to improving the safety issues, the total steam system enjoys improved reliability and integrity.
