For our purposes, space heating equipment is any steam heat exchanger used for comfort control, such as unit heaters, air handling units, finned radiators and pipe coils. Space heating equipment is found in just about every industry and comes in various designs. Some designs raise and lower the temperature of steam in the coil to satisfy the temperature set point. Other designs use constant steam and vary the amount of air passed over the coil face. Coils can be placed vertically or horizontally in duct work or be freestanding in a room.
Regardless of design, space heating equipment is quite basic and requires little maintenance. This leads to a significant problem: traps in space heating are often neglected, and failure can go unnoticed. When this happens, either a great deal of energy is wasted or condensate is retained in the oil, resulting in damage from freezing, water hammer or corrosion.
