Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers

Shell and tube heat exchangers come in two styles. In one, the steam is in the body, or shell, of the heat exchanger, and the product is pumped through numerous tubes encased in the shell. In the other, the product is pumped into the shell, where it surrounds tubes filled with steam. In either case, close contact between the product space and steam space ensures good heat transfer.
